Dorm Keys, Student IDs, and Bottle Openers: The Legendary SVC Logo Lanyard

SVC lanyards were a must on campus—especially the ones attached to bottle openers.

Edward Everett would likely have appreciated seeing Southern Vermont College students sporting SVC lanyards complete with built-in bottle openers—he was in the glass bottle manufacturing business, after all.

SVC lanyards were a staple on the Bennington mountainside campus, helping students keep track of their student IDs, car keys, and everyday essentials like pens, hand sanitizer, or glasses. 

Lanyards were indispensable back then—carrying SVC’s notoriously bulky dorm keys meant juggling separate keys for private rooms and shared spaces. Interestingly, many students opted for the "hanging out of the pocket" style rather than wearing them around the neck as intended.

To keep up with student demand, the SVC bookstore constantly stocked fresh lanyard designs featuring different color schemes and logos. The particular lanyard highlighted here dates from the college's twilight years, around 2018.

Purchased in the basement of the Everett Mansion—a vintage SVC sweatshirt built to handle any Bennington winter.

This sweatshirt was originally purchased at the Southern Vermont College bookstore, tucked away in the basement of the Everett Mansion.

For such a small school, the shop carried an impressive selection of apparel. However, it was notorious for high prices until Priscilla K. took over as manager and deliberately lowered prices to make SVC gear accessible to all students.

Traditionally styled with crisp "Southern Vermont College" lettering, this quality garment serves as a fitting tribute to the school's memorable mountainside campus.

Though it was a bit of an investment when first purchased, it has truly withstood the test of time. Still in fantastic shape after more than two decades, this classic sweatshirt remains the perfect layer to get you through a chilly Bennington winter.

 

Southern Vermont College Bookmark | Everett Mansion & Mission Statement

Gothic details and transformative learning: a classic SVC bookmark from the Karen Gross era.

During President Karen Gross's administration, Southern Vermont College updated its official mission statement. This bookmark pairs that revised statement with a backdrop of the Everett Mansion's signature gothic-style sconce. 

While the bookmark reflects the college's core mission for the 2014–2015 academic year, the exact dates this specific wording remained in effect are uncertain.

"Southern Vermont College offers a transformative living and learning experience that cultivates lifelong learners in a personalized setting, emphasizes active learning and exploration, and encourages empowered citizenship and environmental sensibility."

The Mysterious Hand-Shaped Sconce: A Classic SVC Bookmark

Sent to supporters during a past Annual Fund campaign, this SVC bookmark captures one of the mansion's most intriguing architectural details.

First-time visitors to Southern Vermont College were always magnetically drawn to the Everett Mansion's mysterious, hand-shaped sconce.

Eerily fashioned in human form, the unique light fixture never failed to spark a sense of intrigue.

This bookmark was sent to SVC supporters following an Annual Fund campaign many years ago—a fitting keepsake to tuck into my finest volume!

 

A Bittersweet Keepsake: Southern Vermont College Alumni Decal

Marking the end of an era: the final SVC Alumni decal.

This decal was given out during Southern Vermont College's final Alumni Weekend. The mood was somber, as everyone in attendance knew the school would soon be closing its doors for good.

The decal features the official SVC logo alongside the "Alumni" designation—all set against the college's signature shade of green.

After graduation, my Southern Vermont College diploma sat hidden on a shelf for years, tucked behind books and gathering dust. Then came the ultimate heartbreak for our community—the closing of SVC.

Grief and nostalgia eventually led me down memory lane, prompting me to pick up that padded folder for the first time in ages.

Opening the plush leatherette cover, I was struck by a detail I had long forgotten: a delicate pen-and-ink sketch of the Everett Mansion facing the certificate!

Surely I noticed it on graduation day. Like most new grads, I inspected my diploma right away to make sure my name was spelled correctly. Seeing President Barbara Sirvis's signature alongside the division chair felt like a true miracle on Mansion Drive, conferring all the rights and privileges of an SVC alumnus.

Yet those subtle flourishes fade from memory over time—only to enchant us when rediscovered decades later.

Having spent four years at SVC, stepping into the Everett Mansion always felt as natural and comfortable as slipping into a favorite pair of shoes. It has been forever and a day since I last walked through those heavy doors, but one glance at that pen-and-ink drawing brings every Bennington memory flooding back.

Bound in sleek black leatherette and featuring elegant gold-embossed lettering, the cover serves as a timeless tribute to the rich history and traditions of Southern Vermont College.

Fueled by Coffee and Community: The 1998–1999 SVC Residence Life Mug

Keeping RDs and switchboard operators energized through those long Bennington winters.

This vintage SVC mug dates back to the 1998–1999 academic year. Resident Directors at Southern Vermont College had a demanding job—and undoubtedly relied on plenty of coffee to fuel their long days and late nights.

The RD office was located on the first floor of Aldis Hall, which also housed Student Life, Security, and Counseling Services.

Aldis Hall was also home to the SVC switchboard, positioned right behind the main lobby desk. Professionally staffed during the day and run by work-study students on evenings and weekends, working the switchboard was widely considered a prized campus assignment.
